At the safe house, Jane opened the door with a smile, gesturing for me to come inside. I accepted, stepping into the small, dimly lit room.

“What did you learn? You said you wanted to tell me in person?” she asked eagerly.

Over the last few weeks, we’d gotten to know each other—trauma-bonded, some might say. She had been assaulted, and I, too, had been through some rough experiences. I’d almost been killed once—twice, actually. It’s a strange thing, finding camaraderie in shared pain.

I guided her to the sofa and motioned for her to sit. This was big news, and I didn’t want her to collapse or something. People responded to this sort of revelation in all kinds of ways. I sat beside her, choosing my words carefully.

“Jane,” I began gently, “we think we’ve learned your identity.”

Her eyes widened. “You did? Did you find my child too?”

We hadn’t found her child, and according to her sister, there was no reason to believe Jane wouldn’t have her child with her. “No, I’m sorry. Not yet.”

Her face dropped. “But you know my identity?”

“Yes, we had someone recognize you from the Facebook page I put together. Remember, I showed it to you on my phone? They showed up at Drakos Monroe and asked to talk to me about you. That’s why I left earlier.” I paused. “She said she knows you.”

Jane leaned forward, her expression turning intense. “How?”

“She says she’s your sister.”

“Sister?” she said. “And you believe her?”

“At this point, we don’t really have a reason not to believe her,” I said. “And quite frankly, there is a strong physical resemblance. Plus, what she told me about your—her—family all fits with what we’ve learned so far. Even the little details, like the homemade tattoos and lack of medical records.”

She clutched onto the edge of the sofa before she said, “What’s my name?”

“Hanna Wren.”

“Hanna,” she repeated softly. “Hanna,” she murmured again, almost to herself.

“Does that sound familiar?”

“Maybe…” She hesitated. “It doesn’t sound wrong.”

“Well, she’s still at Drakos Monroe and would like to see you. I know you don’t remember her, but maybe seeing her will help jog some memories.”

Jane—Hanna—swallowed hard, then met my gaze with determination. “I’d like to meet her. Is it safe?”

“Yes, it’s safe. We’ll be right there with you the whole time.”

“Good.”

“Do you have any questions?”

“No, I guess not. I just want to see this person who claims to be my sister, and maybe—maybe she can help me figure out what happened to me. What did she say about me?”

I explained everything Keisha had told us about her—Hanna’s—life. How she had run off with a boy named Jacob, and she’d been pregnant at the time. But after that, Keisha knew very little about what happened to her since they hadn’t spoken in more than three years.

Jane said, “But that doesn’t explain why I had changed shelters and kept heading south. I must have been running from something—or someone. Could it be this Jacob person?”

“Maybe.” Most likely.

“Then why wouldn’t I just go home if
